When my niece got close to losing her teeth a few years ago, I wanted to make something special that she could put them in for the Tooth Fairy. Well, part of it is that I wanted to make a really cute box because I just can't help myself when it comes to altered books.
I had seen a really cute Tooth Fairy poem done with an Altoid's tin not that long before done with a fairy on top and the poem on the inside. That inspired the idea to do not just the Altoid's tin, but to enclose it in something even more special. Again, it's all about the altered books for me!
I sectioned off my book into two halves and glued the pages down to the front and back covers to create a "block" of pages on each side. I cut out the shadow box and decorated the Altoid's tin to go inside.
I decorated the book sections with patterned papers, stamps, punch-outs, glitter and the poem. I sponged on the outside edges of the pages to soften them up a bit.
I glued the Altoid's tin inside the shadow box so that it wouldn't get lost.
My niece was so thrilled when I gave it to her for her birthday that year. When my grandfather saw it, he was astounded. He'd never seen a book used in this way. My grandfather has a dry humor and he's a quiet and shy sort of guy, so when he pulls out a joke, it surprises us all. He looked the book over and then told me, "Hey, you could go into business making these for the mob to put their guns in!"
Something tells me they probably wouldn't go for the Tooth Fairy idea, though. *wink* Though it WOULD be a good cover.
So, what's in YOUR altered book?
