And the winner is..........and how I met my hubby

Dscn6060I just ran the numbers through the random number generator and it picked out a winner from THE NEW YEAR'S GIVE-AWAY!

I have to tell you that I was SHOCKED that this give-away got 175 comments!! I was floored! I was so excited to see that SO many of you have taken part in this and shared your stories.

I just wanted to make a public "Thank You" to all that shared and also hope that you understand if I don't personally respond to every one of you. I LOVED reading through them and I've read EVERY ONE OF THEM! But it's a big job to respond to all and I hope you know that I love all of my readers and get warm fuzzies every time you all leave a comment. I try to respond to as many as I can, but I've come to realize that I really am a "one girl show," even as much as I try my hardest to do everything. *wink* I'm sure you all know how that is.....crafting, house chores, trying to be superwoman, being the cook, the maid, etc. :)

So, thank you all for taking the time to comment. I appreciate each one!

Now.........on to the winner......and then I'll share my own story of how I met my honey.

The winner is: Carol Lee

My husband and I had just recently moved back into our parents house , we lived 4 doors down from one another. I was out washing my car one day before going to work , and he walked up the street. Of course he would have to pick this time to come talk to my. I was in a baggie sweatshirt,no make-up on, and my hair was up in a scrunchie. I was hoping he was just walking up the street to go catch the bus or something.. Not my luck- he stops right next to me and says " DO you know that you are a hard person to catch up with? I Have been trying for over a month and you are never home. By the way My name is Bob & I spell it backwards. Our first date was a walk on the beach and we talked for what seemed to be an eternity. By the end of the evening I knew everything about him, and knew that we were meant to be together. So, I literally married the guy next door . ( well 4 doors down)

What a great story, Carol Lee! Just goes to show that there ARE men out there that look past the outside! :) You snagged yourself a good one!

Dscn6177b_2

I met Davy at the end of January of 1996. My family was getting ready to move from Pennsylvania to Vermont. We had lived in PA for a little over 2 years and missed the mountains and laid back lifestyle of northern New England.

My family had a few home businesses at the time and one of them was a natural bakery. We supplied to some area stores, but my father also did a route (like the old "milk men" and "bread men" of the golden days) once a week. One of the places he stopped at was the store that my brother-in-law worked at. He would buy baked goods from my dad and bring them home to his family. My MIL called us to order some extra goodies for company they were having over and we told her to order extra because we'd be moving in 3 weeks. She stopped over and picked them up and Davy drove her over. I said hello quickly and then went back upstairs to finish some packing I was doing. Yah, he was cute, but I was 19 and and wasn't in the market for a husband. I was determined NOT to get married, NOT to have kids and was going to own a horse farm. At least that's what the dream was. I didn't want a man to be tied down to.

Our mothers got to talking and found out they got married the same year, had 4 kids and we were all the same ages, except for a boy on each side of the families. My MIL invited my family over for dinner. The night came (it was 8 days before we moved) and we all decided that we had far too much to do than to go to a family's house for dinner that we probably would never see again. My mother said that was rude, so we called and said we'd just come over for dessert, stay a couple hours and then leave. Little did we know, the boys in the Martin household (there's 4 of them) were just as quick not to have us over either. They were tired from work and school and figured it was pointless to have a family over they'd never see again.

Well, we went over at 5 pm and left at 1 am the next morning. We all got along really well and played quite a few rounds of cards and board games. Come to find out, my husband actually worked in the same store as my dad. My dad did a couple days at a HUGE local grocery store in their bakery department and my husband worked in the produce department...they'd passed by each other every now and then and said hello, but that's as far as it went. For 2 years! I remember going into the produce department one time with my grandmother and she spotted my husband working and told me that she was going to set me up with him and I told her she better not dare! I had to laugh when I eventually told her that I was dating the produce guy!

We moved 8 days after we met and 4 months later, we started dating. 10 months later, we were engaged and 2 1/2 months after that, we were married. That was in June of 1997. My sister and my husband's brother started dating the same day we did, got engaged the day after we did and got married 4 weeks after we did. They're no longer together, but they both live near by. Ten and a half years of marriage later, I'm still in love with my Davy and even more so than I've ever been. So much for thinking we'd never see them again!

Oh.....the picture above was taken the night we all went over for that dessert that was only supposed to last 2 hours but ended up lasting 8 hours long. I'm ALL the way on the far right. Yes, I was a snazzy dressing little hippie way back then, too. My husband is the middle one in the back row. The one with his eyes closed in the picture. I like to think he was day dreaming about me. ;) HA! Fact is, neither one of us were interested in the other one romantically that night. Hey, we didn't think we'd ever see each other again, so what was the point? ;) Guess God had other ideas. :)

And the winner is..........

Dscn5965_3And we have a winner!!!

Thank you to everyone that played along with the Birthday Give-Away Post I held! I loved reading all of your stories of the best give you ever gave. I found myself with tears welling up while reading so many of your stories!

Every time I do a give-away post, I always wish that I had something I could send to EVERYONE!

But......alas, I can only have one winner this time around.

I'm taking a gamble here at sounding cliche, but I just wanted to let you know that you're all winners for your giving and generous spirits. Your stories proved that!

The winner of this give-away is Robb_eeie!

Robb_eeie, please email me with your snail mail addy so I can get your stamps mailed off you to right away!

And here's Robb_eeie's comment about her best gift:

Hey Erika~~ Love these clear stamps and I would most certainly make good use of them. *wink* I've been trying to pick my brain as to what would be the most memorable gift I've given someone. My pick would have to be this .....
Back in November '07, when my Mom turned 80 years young, wehad a family party for her, which consisted of dinner, gifts and cake, etc. She really had a nice time but I still had something up my sleeve to really SUPER-DUPER surprise her. *evil grin* Afterall, it was her 80th birthday!

I wrote my Mom a note as part of her gift, saying on the following Wednesday I'd be picking her up around 2:00 p.m. and she wouldn't be home until about 1:00 a.m. and that she should wear comfortable shoes ~~~ I'd give her further "hints" as the days passed. I never told my Dad where I was taking my Mom, as I didn't want him slipping up the surprise. As the days passed, I'd give her subtle hints as to what we were going to be doing for the day and I think her finally guess was that we were going to go swimming for the afternoon (we both love to swim) and then out for dinner and a movie. Haaaa little did she know :)

I picked her up and as we started driving my Mom kept wanting to have more clues, as she was going nuts trying to figure out what the surprise was. Well of course for me, this was what was Soooo great about this gift, the Fact that she didn't know. I gave her a piece of paper that had a name on it; of course the letters were all scrambled, so she'd have to try and put them in order to make sense.

Fast forward through a two hour drive as we arrived at a Casino. Again, my Mom just assumed we'd be doing some slot playing, have a nice dinner, etc. Nope, not even close! I had managed to obtain through a dear friend, some great seats for a concert staring singer, Engelbert Humperdinck (the more *mature* readers will know this name haha). I finally had to tell my Mom the first name was "Engelbert", and with the next breath my Mom's head looked like it was going to explode off her shoulders! haaaa ! She grabbed my hand so tight saying how exciting it was and how did I ever plan this or think of it, how did I get tickets, how did I remember that she liked his singing and songs so much, etc. etc. That was all I needed to see and feel to KNOW this evening was the best gift I could have given my Mom.

And by the end of Engelbert's performance, my Mom was singing to all his old tunes and up dancing and wiggling around with a huge smile on her face the entire time. It was a wonderful show and Engelbert certainly has aged well *hubba hubba* and still has a lovely voice, not to mention a wonderful sense of humour.

As we were leaving the concert hall to head back home, my Mom held my arm and said, "This is silly but I feel rather sad that the show is over, as I had such a good time remembering all his songs and trying to recall what I was doing at that time in my life while hearing his music. And I'm also going to miss having this mystery date on my mind and trying to figure out where we were going and what we were going to do".

It was an **AMAZING** moment being able to see my Mom relive some of her younger days and be so enthralled with the songs and music that surrounded us. How much better could life get :0)

Gotta love a good Give-Away! :)

Dscn5965I just came to the realization that I have seriously fallen short when it comes to posting this give-away. I meant to do this last weekend, then again on Monday and here it is.....Wednesday. I'm FINALLY getting this put up.

I know you'll all overlook it, considering most of you probably weren't on your computers much over the last 5 days anyway with the holidays going on. That, at least, makes me feel like I don't suck so much. Haha!

Thank you for all the wonderful birthday wishes! They are all so appreciated!

I had a lovely day....the hubby made me breakfast and did the 3 day's worth of dishes that were sitting on the counter (it actually made me GLAD that I hadn't gotten any dishes done for 3 days because I was REALLY dreading doing them!). We took the kids bowling in the afternoon and were the only ones there (I'm assuming everyone else that WOULD have been bowling on the weekend were out doing their last minute shopping), so the owner of the bowling alley gave us a fun little "field trip" behind the scenes of the bowling alley. He even gave each of the kids a REAL bowling pin (wow....those things are HEAVY) to take home with them.

So, I wanted to do a give-away because I love to give things away and I figure that my birthday is as good a reason as any!

The lucky winner will get these 4 packages of clear stamps. I'm sure the winner will be able to find all kinds of uses for these!

*** This Give-Away is NOT limited to where you live.....so even if you are outside of the US or Canada, you can still participate.***

So......what do you need to do to enter this Groovy Give-Away?

Leave a comment on this post telling me the best gift you ever gave to someone else.

And to go along with that theme....I found a quote the other day that I just LOVE!

"Giving is the highest expression of potency. In the very act of giving, I experience my strength, my wealth, my power. This experience of heightened vitality and potency fills me with joy. I experience myself as overflowing, spending, alive, hence as joyous. Giving is more joyous than receiving, not because it is a deprivation, but because in the act of giving lies the expression of my aliveness."

Erich Fromm, 1900-1980

I'll pick a name with the random number generator on Friday (12/28) at 11 am Eastern Time and announce the winner here!

Spread the groovy love and send your friends over to enter, too! And while you're at it, if you haven't already signed up for my mailing list (which is that little box ALL THE WAY at the top of my blog, right under my picture), pop your email address into that box so that you don't miss out on any of the fun stuff I have going on outside of this blog, along with newsletters and more!

The winners of the Give-Away and huge THANKS!

Dscn5535_2 We have some winners!!!

This has been a truly amazing Give-Away!

Not just because of all the awesome prizes.....but

* because I've met some amazing people along the way

* because so many of you have helped to spread the word

* because people are taking a closer look at Autism and educating themselves

* because we've raised funds for a GREAT cause

* because this give-away has prompted me to put some new projects into the works to continue with a cause that is very dear to my heart....and to help other causes that are making a difference in the lives of children

Thank you to everyone for making this so much fun and truly amazing!

I want to thank the sponsors that made this give-away possible!

  • Russ and Kevin from MockUTV and also the creator of the mockumentary - "Inside Scrapbooking." Russ and Kevin have generously been donating a portion of the sales from each DVD sold to Autism Support Daily. While I don't know Kevin, I have had the pleasure of getting to know Russ through emails and on the phone and he's a very witty, charming and generous man with a heart for this cause that just blows my mind. I'm still shocked every day that he chose us! Thank you, Russ. I'm so thankful for the friendship that has just begun through this, but one that I can see lasting a lifetime. Thank you, Kevin, for being such a great part of this!
  • Gina from GinaK Designs. Gina is one of the most giving, genuine and generous people I know in the paper crafting industry. When Gina plucked me out of the online stamping world, I was stunned. Gina has helped to push my creative side and has given me opportunities that I never knew existed. She has been 100% behind my cause right from the start.....and has done whatever she could to help us promote Autism Awareness. She created the "Love you to Pieces" set in honor of my son, Zach, and I still have a hard time believing that we've raised over $5000 to date towards research in the field of autism. Gina has given us banner space on SCS to help promote the DVD, has generously given a coupon to go inside every DVD and has plugged us all along. Gina, you are an amazing woman and I am blessed beyond words to work with someone with such integrity and that has a heart so full of compassion!
  • Maria from Kitchen Sink Stamps. I haven't known Maria too long, but what I have seen of Maria and gotten to know along the way of our short, but growing, friendship is that she has a heart of gold. Maria was right there, gladly willing to help, as soon as she found out about our give-away a few weeks ago. Her generosity to take part in something I truly believe in, even though we've only "known" each other since October, astounds me! There was no hesitation.....she was there as soon as the opportunity to give was there. Maria, thank you for believing in me.....in Zach and I...and thank you for being such a wonderful part of this cause!
  • Ying Lai. Ying jumped right on the wagon with us as soon as she saw our give-away and offered up the Autism Cap, knowing that it would be a great addition to our prize package. What a great way to show your support for such a worthy cause when you're wearing a hat like that! Thank you, Ying, for being so giving!

Dscn5774_2 I believe that everything happens for a reason and I can see that I was paired up with some amazing people over the course of having my blog.....so that it could all come together for something like this. To help make a difference in the lives of people that deal daily with their world of autism.

And I also have to say that I was surprisingly blessed to get all the comments about how great you think Zach's artwork is! I have to admit that I was just a teensy bit hesitant to put Zach's artwork up for the give-away. I thought that some might find it cheesy or too kid-like. That it might not be anything spectacular. Of course, I'm his mom so I'm incredibly biased, but I thought that's as far as it would go and that others might see it as some cutesy type of thing that an 8 year old created.

WOW! The comments I got were so incredible and encouraging and I was TOTALLY JAZZED that Zach's painting was the thing people were so excited about! You have no idea how happy, smiley and PROUD your comments have made me! I don't think Zach understands the scope of what you all think of him.....but he was just STOKED to see a picture of his painting on the computer. That's what made HIS day! He had to hold his actual painting up to the computer screen to make sure it was the same one!

And so.........on to the winners. This morning, Zach dug down deep into a BIG paper bag (I'm SHOCKED that we got 326 comments on the Give-Away Post......CRAZY!!!) and pulled out three winners!

And before I get to those (I will right after this announcement, I promise!), this isn't the last you've seen of Zach's artwork. He's working on more and you'll see those soon online....helping to get the word about autism out. It makes my mommy-heart beam with pride that a child like Zach can help out other kids, just like himself....so be on the lookout! He's going to be breaking into the art world soon!

If you're looking to still help out with this cause and are looking for someone to bless during the holiday season, there's a little donation banner on the side bar of my blog (just scroll down a tad) to donate directly to Autism Support Daily.

So......The GRAND PRIZE WINNER of the biggest prize package you've seen online is....

Wow--what an artist! Zach definitely has talent and I'd be honored to hang his artwork in my office. You've done a great job of letting people know all about this cause and how worthy it is. Thanks for sharing.

(This just goes to show that even if you're the first to comment on a give-away post, that doesn't mean that you'll never win!)

The two RUNNER-UP winners are:

What a great cause and some wonderful prizes. My mum used to work with autistic children (she is retired now)she loved it. I hope you make bundles for the cause and raise even more awareness.

And.......

What a great prize to receive! Zach is a true artist - he takes after his mom. And I'm heading to buy my DVD now!

Girls.....get your snail mail addresses to me so that I can get your prize packages out in the mail!

Thank you, again, to everyone for playing, for the wonderful comments and the support!

With much love and affection,
Erika (and Zach)

One of the BIGGEST Give-Aways EVER!

This is one of the BIGGEST Give-Aways you'll EVER see!!!

**NOTE*** This post is stickied to the top of my blog until the give-away is over....please scroll down to see my newest posts.

You all know I have a passion to see strides in the area of autism research and to see families with autistic children get help NOW! This Give-away has EVERYTHING to do with that!

From today through midnight on Wednesday (12/19), a bunch of us have teamed up to help promote one of my favorite Autism charities - Autism Support Daily

Dvd_2If you're looking for a great way to help out the cause of Autism, MockUTV.com has put out a hilarious mockumentary DVD following the crazy and zany antics of Molly McGann, on her way to "Scrapapalooza." My sides are in stitches every time I watch this! Through January 1st, $1.00 from every DVD sold is being donated to Autism Support Daily. It's a great way to help out the cause, laugh at ourselves and also a great gift to other crazy papercrafters! (the DVD is only $9.95 and there's FREE shipping!!) And..........each DVD comes with a coupon for a free bottle of Stickles from GinaK Designs!

If there are those of you that already have the DVD or just want to make a donation to Autism Support Daily, there's a nifty little banner over on my sidebar (scroll down just a tad) with my son's picture on it. You can click through this banner to donate directly to ASD. Autism Support Daily is approved by the IRS as a 501(C)3 charitable organization.

We want to thank everyone for all the support they've shown by spreading the word and purchasing from those of us that have been supporting this cause.....so we've come up with a BIG BANG Give-Away to show our appreciation!

Autismset_3 There will be 3 WINNERS from this Give-Away!

One grand prize winner will receive:

* "Inside Scrapbooking" DVD - Molly's adventure to Scrapapalooza!
(a $9.95 value)

* "Love you to Pieces" stamp set by GinaK Designs
(see picture at left - this set was created in honor of my son, Zach, to promote Autism Awareness and to date, GinaK has donated over $5000 to autism research from the sale of this set) (a $21.95 value)

NOTE: GinaK just announced that from now through Wednesday (12/19), she will be donating $8 from each "Love you to Pieces" stamp set sold directly to Autism Support Daily!

(a value of $12.95) Ying JUST received her cap and has generously donated it as a prize in our give-away (THANKS, Ying.....it's amazing how caring and compassionate paper crafters are! They're always willing to jump on board to help a great cause!)

The puzzle piece is the symbol for autism, since this disorder is such a puzzle to figure out.

.

* The "Playful Alphabet" set from Kitchen Sink Stamps (a $29.95 value)

* One month of the Stampin' Mama Tutorial Program
(4 tutorials total - a value of $13.95)

Books_028_2 * An original handmade book by me, Erika Martin *wink*. This book measures 4 x 4 and is great to use as a small brag book. (click HERE for pictures of the inside of the book. (a $15.00 value)

Dscn5727 And finally, but certainly not least, one of my favorite parts of this Give-Away!

Zach has created an amazing piece of artwork to gift to the lucky winner! He has titled this piece, "Fireflies in the Field at Night."

Zach has a fondness (aka: obsession) with bugs and fireflies are his favorite. Many of our spring, summer and early fall nights are spent in the massive field behind our house, looking for bugs. The firefly season is his favorite.

When Zach sat down to create this work of art, it was only natural for him to draw and paint one of his favorite things.

The night blue sky is done with a metallic acrylic paint, so it shimmers in the light. The stars and fireflies have glitter accents on them, as Zach was insistent that they "sparkle."

Dscn5749 This is a 9 x 12 inch work on a canvas wrapped frame. It was done with acrylics and is signed on the back by Zach himself.

Along with this piece of artwork is a picture of Zach creating his art.

The Grand Prize is worth a total of $136.70 and a PRICELESS piece of Zach's artwork!!!

And because giving away more than one prize is ALWAYS fun....there will be two runner-up winners chosen!

The two Runner-Up winners will each receive:

* One month of the Stampin' Mama Tutorial Program (4 tutorials total - a value of $13.95)

* The "Paper Bag Book Tutorial CD" from the Stampin' Mama Store  (a $17.95 value)

So......what do you need to do to enter this Give-Away?

Simply leave a comment on this post and you'll be entered!

*** This Give-Away is NOT limited to where you live.....so even if you are outside of the US or Canada, you can still participate.***
