May Freedom Ring.....Kitchen Sink Stamps style

Dscn8903I'm on a patriotic kick this week! Of course, with stamp sets like the new Playful Stars set, it's easy to come up with great ideas!

I'm also really digging the Real Red and Bashful Blue combo for patriotic cards. It's a little softer than the Real Red and Brilliant Blue combo that most people choose to work with.

I also don't have any Brilliant Blue cardstock big enough to work with for a layer on the Real Red cardstock.....so the next color to go for was Bashful Blue. I did that with yesterday's Star Spangled Card post and thought, "hey, this looks really good with Bashful Blue!" So, here I go again....using it today on this card.

I created the starry background on the Whisper White cardstock using the 4 smallest stars that come in the Playful Stars set. To make this really easy, I stuck all 4 stars on my acrylic block in a diamond pattern and then inked it up with Real Red ink and stamped it onto my carstock. I reinked and stamped a few times to get my entire background. I didn't have to worry about even placement of the stars because I had them all mounted on the block at once. It was like having my own custom background stamp.

I like my stars to have lots of bling and sparkle. At first, I was just going to emboss the images with clear embossing powder and then realized I had an almost new container of Iridescent Ice embossing powder in my drawer. It's not that I don't like using it, it's just that for quite a few years, I didn't have any and kept forgetting that SU carried it. Now that I have it, I forget that it's there and that I can actually use it! I stamped my star images on Real Red and Bashful Blue cardstock with Versamark ink and then embossed them with Iridescent Ice embossing powder. I cut the images out and popped them up on the Whisper White cardstock with pop-dots.

Dscn8904 The greeting is from the new Ready 4 Any Holiday set. I stamped this on a scrap piece of Real Red cardstock with Versamark ink and embossed it with Black embossing powder. I cut above and below the greeting with a pair of pinking edge scissors. This got popped up on the Whisper White cardstock with pop-dots, as well.

Have a lovely evening and a wonderful week!

Happy Creating!

Have a star spangled day - Emboss Resist

Dscn8861I keep forgetting that July starts on Tuesday! Is it just me or did June go by really fast for the rest of you?

This is the first year in a VERY long time that we'll be gone for the 4th of July weekend. My kids were disappointed when they heard we weren't going to be in town for the town fireworks. I explained to them that we'll be camping and, while they were excited about it, they were STILL disappointed about the camping. I asked them, "What would you rather do? Spend 4 days at Taylor Pond or spend the whole weekend at home just to see an hour of fireworks?" Girly voted for camping, Zach voted for fireworks. I had to laugh at them because they were totally typical answers and I fully predicted them. Girly can see the value in spending a whole weekend camping while Zach just looks at the hear and now....he sometimes can't see the big picture. I struck a compromise with them. I told them we'd bring sparklers along so they can have their own little version of fireworks. Zach wasn't convinced at the time, but I'm sure once he's out there, he'll forget all about the fireworks happening without him. ;)

Anyway..........I finally got a chance to ink up these new stamps from Kitchen Sink Stamps. The three stamp sets that I used on this card are perfect for the patriotic holiday coming up. They're also great for scrapbook pages that show off the pictures you take this 4th of July holiday (or Canada Day pictures for those of our friends living north of the border).

Sometimes I get so caught up in trying new techniques and creating my own techniques that I forget all the "oldies but goodies" out there. When I first started stamping 7 years ago, one of the techniques that I fell head over heels with was the Emboss Resist technique. It's such a simple technique, but when you play around with it, the effects you can get are stunning!

It's refreshing to go back to the things I first learned while stamping and enjoy playing with those techniques all over again. It gives me a renewed passion for why I love this art form in the first place!

Dscn8863 I used the Playful Stars set for the large star in the middle of the cardstock (Whisper White). I then stamped one of the swirls from the Swirly Hearts & Stars set in between each of the points of the star. I stamped these in Versamark ink and then embossed the images with Clear embossing powder.

After the embossed images cooled down, I inked up a sponge with Real Red ink and rubbed it in a circle around the large star. I then inked up another sponge with Bashful Blue ink and rubbed it in a circle around the red ink. The harder you rub into the cardstock, the more ink you're going to transfer onto the cardstock and the more your image is going to pop out.

I inked up a third sponge with Blue Bayou ink and sponged that around the top and bottom edges. I didn't plan to use the Blue Bayou ink when I first started with this card but I felt like the card needed a darker blue and when I was done with it, it really looked like fireworks going off in the night sky. The Blue Bayou gives you the feeling of the night sky.

I wanted to add a little fireworks sort of sparkle, so I applied some dots of 2-Way glue around the outside of the swirly image and sprinkled Dazzling Diamonds glitter on them. The glitter took it to a whole new level. LOVE IT!

I mounted all of this on top of Bashful Blue cardstock and then on top of a Real Red card base.

The greeting was done with Basic Black ink using one of the images from the new Ready 4 Any Holiday set. This set fills in with the holidays that you don't often find greetings for.

Enjoy your last day of June!

Happy Creating!

3-Step Hibiscus card

Dscn8780When Maria showed us the new 3-step Hibiscus set, I about fell off my chair. Oh, so beautiful! There are so many color combinations that you can come up with. I've had so many things going on lately that I haven't been able to get around to playing with it yet. I finally had some time today and couldn't wait to break it out and ink it up!

Actually......I forced myself to have some time tonight. I needed my creative fix. My kids' last day of school was yesterday and I've had my sister's kids here a couple days this week (and I'll have them again tomorrow). I spent part of the day at the bowling alley today for Zach's end of school party with the autism program. I had 4 kids with me (my 2 and my sister's 2) and that's always an adventure. Needless to say, I needed to get some time with my stamps and ink.

And needless to say, I'm head over heels with this set. Look at how PURTY that is!

This large flower is actually 5 steps but they're so easy to line up, especially because the image sheet that comes with the stamps has a position guide.

Here are the colors that I used for each of the steps:

1) Apricot Appeal
2) Regal Rose
3) Rose Red
4) Baroque Burgandy (stamping off the top layer of ink once)
5) Baroque Burgandy (fully inked)

If you've never heard of "stamping off" before, it's a really simple concept and comes in really handy for multiple step sets when you're trying to achieve a balance of coordinating colors.

To "stamp off," I inked up the stamp with ink and stamped it once onto scrap paper and then onto my cardstock. The next image was done on top with a full layer of ink. I got two images with one ink pad, but a lighter and a darker shade. They both coordinated because they came from the same original color.
Dscn8781 I used the same "stamping off" technique with the leaves. The leaves were 3 steps and I used one color of ink. For the first inking, I stamped off twice onto scrap paper with the first image.  For the second image, I stamped off only once. With the third image, I stamped with a full coverage of ink on my stamp. I used Wild Wasabi ink for the leaves.

For a little bit of depth, I sponged around my cardbase with Regal Rose ink (the same color as the cardstock).

The patterned paper I used is from the hostess prints pack of paper. The pattern is done in Pretty in Pink.

The greeting images come from the same Hibiscus set and I used Baroque Burgandy ink to stamp them. I felt like my card need a little bit more to balance it all off, so I used some little pink dots from the Hydrangea colored Dew Drops above the greeting. I adhered those with some mini glue dots.

I don't often find a use for REALLY wide grosgrain ribbon but it looks so pretty and elegant on this card.

And now....I'm off to be before I turn into a pumpkin. It is WAY past my bedtime!

Bake it, Make it & Take it.....Ready for Strawberry Shortcake??

Dscn8714My mom and I realized that it's been WAY to long since my last Bake it, Make it & Take it post. Almost a month, in fact. To be honest, it's been so hot here lately that I haven't really wanted to bake anything. The hot and humid streak we had going on broke last night with a few storm fronts that swept through. If every day could be like today, I'd be in heaven! The perfect temperature, no humidity.....I even sat outside today on my deck to shoot the tutorial I just released today for my Stampin' Mama Tutorial Program. It was so perfect that I felt like turning my oven on because I was in the mood for something no summer can be without.

So....what did I bake today?

Why, Strawberry Shortcake, of course!

With strawberries just coming into season, this is the perfect time for baking up a batch of homemade buttermilk biscuits and serving them up with fresh, juicy strawberries.

My mom (Donna, from Spatulas, Suitcases & Corkscrews) created the most amazing buttermilk biscuit recipe EVER. I also love her recipe for fluffy homemade whipped cream (which is so easy to make!). You can check out her recipe here: Strawberry Shortcake.

I doubled the recipe and got 24 biscuits...and made sure to buy extra strawberries so that we'd have round two for dessert tomorrow night. (Oh....and for breakfast, I ate a couple biscuits with butter and strawberry jam right after they came out of the oven this morning!) Wednesday night is poker night here at the house with my brother, hubby, brother-in-law and grandfather (and they've even got me playing now!) and I always make sure to have something yummy on hand for dessert. Everyone loved it and I even sent my brother and grandfather home with an extra helping in a little container so they could have a round two of their own tomorrow.

When I was thinking about baking these biscuits yesterday, I had planned to bring some over to our neighbors. They're a cute young couple that bring us fresh farm eggs every now and then and I show up with treats on their doorstep when I bake. They brought over some eggs last night and today, I stopped over and handed them the cute package of biscuits you see in this post.

Dscn8715 I did a couple things different with the recipe so I thought I'd tell you about them before I get into telling you about the packaging.

1) I didn't have any buttermilk on hand so I used 4 teaspoons of lemon juice (for a double batch) to my 1 1/2 cups of regular milk. This sours the milk when you let it stand for about 15 or so minutes and creates your own homemade buttermilk. You couldn't even tell the difference!

2) Because I doubled the recipe and my food processor is rather on the smallish side, I didn't use the food process at all. Instead, I cut my cold butter into more like shavings and then mixed the dough by hand, making sure to rub handfuls of the mixture to break up the butter and shortening into the mixture.

3) I was too lazy roll out the dough onto my counter and make a mess with flour all over the place, so I rolled balls of dough in my hand and then flattened them out a bit to make a round biscuit shape. Much less clean up this way and they still fluffed up very nicely.

So....on to the packaging. I couldn't really package up the strawberries (though I'm sure I could have found a way if I wanted to go that far), so I chose to package up just the biscuits and give them to our neighbors with a tag on the front explaining what to do with them.

I stacked 4 biscuits in a tall cellophane bag and tied it off with a pretty ribbon. I didn't want the biscuits to just be sitting in the bag without it looking all nice and colorful, so I made my own crinkle grass to go inside the bag. I cut some strips of Pretty in Pink and Certainly Celery and ran them through (three at a time) my crimper tool. I rolled them all together to create a ball and then flattened it out a bit and placed it at the bottom of the bag and stacked the biscuits on top. I love making my own custom made crinkle grass. I never have to worry about having crinkle grass that doesn't match and the paper grass doesn't get all over the place like that plastic grass does. Also, it's a great way to use up those long, thin strips of cardstock that you're hanging onto but don't quite know what to do with.

I wanted to create a tag that had some strawberries on it but realized that I don't own not even ONE strawberry stamp! Not one! I started thinking about what I could use to improvise and found exactly what I needed in one of Kitchen Sink Stamps' newest sets. I used the image that looks like a finial from the Plaid Plus set and turned it upside down to make it look like a strawberry (with Regal Rose ink). I then used one of the small swirled accent images in Wild Wasabi to serve as the stem on top of the strawberry.

Dscn8717 On the front of the tag, I used one of the long plaid-maker images from the set and crossed it in the bottom right corner going vertically and horizontally with Pretty in Pink ink.

The new Other Important People stamp set came in VERY handy for the greeting on the tag. Both the words, "fantastic" and "neighbor," came from that set. And because the Whole Family set matches the font used in the Other Important People set, I could use the "For" without it looking like it didn't belong with the other words.

I created a border of strawberries on the back of the tag, along with directions on what to do with the biscuits in the bag.

The striped/polka-dotted ribbon came from a big box of ribbon that my friend (and muse), Jen, sent me. That ribbon is what gave me the inspiration for the colors that I used with this project. I used a piece of Moss gingham ribbon through the hole on the tag and then tied and secured onto the top of the bag.

If you wanted to do the whole shebang, you could tuck this cute package of biscuits in a basket with a pint of fresh picked strawberries and a can of whipped cream (since it would be hard to put a tub of homemade whipped cream in the basket). It's a great gift to bring along to a BBQ so that the host and hostess can have it the next night.

Here's the link for the recipe again: Strawberry Shortcake

Writing about all of this makes me hungry for round two tonight! Is it tomorrow yet???

Kitchen Sink Stamps sneak peek!

Dscn8627Tomorrow is a big day for Kitchen Sink Stamps! Maria is releasing 8 (yes, you read that right....EIGHT) new stamp sets tomorrow, June 3rd!

And there's lots more happening in the Kitchen right now! Nicole Cooke has two posts up on her blog with the Kitchen Sink Project of the Month. You can check them out here:

Project #1
and
Project #2

Her projects show one of the new sets that will be available starting tomorrow....and if you have any baseball lovers in your family, you are totally covered now! I love the 3-D look of those baseball themed stamps!

I created the card you see in this post using one of Kitchen Sink's new sets called, "3-step Graduation." This set is out in perfect timing for all those graduations happening this month.

We were supposed to go to a graduation party last night, but we had a few issues come up and we weren't able to make it. I made this card to give to the graduate (which I still will, of course) and I was so excited when Maria debuted this set to the team because I KNEW it would get a lot of use just this month alone! We are having a graduation party for the 6 high school graduates in our church this coming Sunday, so it's going to get a work-out this week!

I love 3-step sets, but I think the image I'm most excited about is that diploma. I am TOTALLY digging that! I don't know HOW Maria does it, but she amazes me with those layers that don't look like much on that plastic sheet the stamps come on. But when you put them all together.....WHOA! Love, love, love it!

Dscn8628 To continue with my black and red theme, I adhered a strip of red patterned paper and then layered a piece of black grosgrain ribbon over the top. This created a nice break in between the cap and diploma on top and the second part of the greeting on the bottom. It keeps the card from looking like I have "floating" elements.

For some added embellishment and dimension, I secured a couple of red brads on either side of the bottom greeting and then added another one on the top of the cap where the tassel is connected.

XOXO Card and matching mini flower pot - Kitchen Sink Stamps

Dscn8601I'm just so "tickled pink" with myself right now. I wanna hug my card and my little flower pot because they're just so darn cute., but I'm afraid they'll get crushed, so I'll just sit here and stare at them and smile at myself instead.

This morning, I was feeling SO uninspired. I knew I wanted to create, but I had no clue WHAT to create.

Having my very own muse helps a lot, though. All it takes is a phone call with Jen and I'm on my way. The two of us start brainstorming and then I get all fired up and get to work.

She told me to get out the box of ribbon she sent me to help inspire me. I fell in love with the rick-rack. And then we got talking about working with a little flower pot. I combed through my bins for one of the teeny little flower pots that I knew I had hid somewhere (my daughter had been taking them and planting in them last year and I finally put my last two away so that I would a couple intact when I needed them. I even stamped the pot!

I then went through my utensil drawer (read: drawer with extra big utensils and "stuff" that never gets used) and found a couple skewers in the back. I created the little flowers using my Scalloped edge punch and taped the skewer down with a little bit of Sticky Strip to one of the scallops, then sandwiched the second scalloped circle on top with some pop-dots.

For the card, flowers and pot, I used images from the Love & Luck set (from Kitchen Sink Stamps).

I stamped a border around the little flower pot using the large flourish image from the set. I adhered some rick-rack around the edge of the pot and filled the pot with my own hand made crinkled paper. I couldn't find the paper grass that I thought I still had and was trying to come up with a way to duplicate and remembered that I had a crimper collecting dust under my desk. I had actually hidden it under my desk because the kids tried using it with Playdough once and I was afraid of them ruining it. Out of sight, out of mind.

I cut thin strips of Certainly Celery cardstock and then ran them through the crimper and had (almost) instant crinkled grass. It helped to stabilize the skewers in the pot.

Dscn8599 I tied some of the rick-rack around the skewers to take the place of leaves.

The card I made took elements from the little flower pot. I adhered lengths of rick-rack across the Whisper White cardstock and then adhered scalloped circles on top, staggering them so they'd all fit on the card. I adhered the scalloped circles with pop-dots for dimension.

I stamped the "xoxo" (from the Love & Luck set) with Purely Pomegranate ink. (the other color I used for stamping was Regal Rose)

I'm now going to go stare at my cute little set again. Have a beautiful and creative weekend!

Oh.....and if you haven't entered my give-away yet....you have till Tuesday. Go here ---> Groovy-Give-Away

One Design - Multiple Cards.....from the Kitchen Sink

Dscn8538I realized, just recently, that I haven't done a One Design - Multiple Cards post in a long time. Since February, to be exact. It's definitely LONG overdue!

I'm itching to get in my garden and plant, but I don't dare to put anything in there until after Memorial Day weekend. It's a hard and fast rule in our family that we wait until then. This was something my mom always did and it's something I always do. I found out years ago that my mom waited because the elderly woman across the street from us (when we were living in northern New Hampshire) waited until then. She had a HUGE garden and always had amazing crops. She had rules that she played by when it came to gardening, so she was a good example to follow. The reason she waited until after Memorial Day was because up here in the north, you don't want to take chances on any late frosts that will kill your tiny and tender plantlings.

So.....after Memorial Day it is. I've been wanting to get in there and plant my seeds and go to the farmer's market in town to buy my plants, but I've been holding off, knowing that I NEED to wait just a little while longer. It won't be long now. And it's a good thing I've waited because it's been pretty chilly and wet lately.

I have plans to start planting next week. I'm SO excited! I adore this time of year. I love being out under the sun, with my bare feet feeling the dirt underneath, working the earth. Davy has been getting it ready for me to start planting. He's been out there with the hoe after work, turning the dirt over, getting it all loose. Girly has been weeding it out and taking the rocks out.....funny how they always seems to appear every season when you know you took a bunch out the year before.

Anyway...........these sunflowers, from the Honey Bunny set  (from Kitchen Sink Stamps), make me ache for the warmth of summer and get me anxious to start putting my sunflower seeds into the ground.

Dscn8547 And then there's the amazing Hydrangea stamp set (also from Kitchen Sink Stamps). I don't have any hydrangea flowers in my yard, but that doesn't mean I don't adore them. I can tell you every house on Main Street in town that has hydrangeas in their front yard. I look forward to when they're all blooming and love looking at them when I drive into town.

For these two cards, I went with the same design, but it's amazing how the cards look so different just by changing up the floral images and the colors. The sunflower card has such a warmth to it with all those sunny colors, while the hydrangea card has such a cool calm to it with the blues and greens that I used.

I stamped a frame of flowers around a piece of Confetti White cardstock for both cards. The greetings in the middle of the flowers comes from the Whole Family stamp set. There's lots of different combinations that you can create with this set.

I mounted the Confetti White cardstock on a piece of coordinating cardstock and then onto a coordinating card base.

I almost felt like I had to add something more to the cards.....because it's just how my mind works most of the time.....but realized that it would just be too much. These flowers are so beautiful that they can stand on their own.

Happy Creating!

Embossed backgrounds and a color challenge for myself....

Dscn8384_2 I can't remember the last time I used Brilliant Blue ink. Ages. Maybe more. I challenged myself to break out this color, plus another color I don't use much of and put them together. Green Galore.

It's ironic that I used to be SO into the Bold Brights palette years ago when I first started stamping (that was 7 years ago) and now....well, they scare me. Especially particular colors like Green Galore and Brilliant Blue. I just never seem to think of them or use them much.

It was time to go outside of my comfort zone today.

I started off with Green Galore for the cardstock and stamped one of the ovals from Kitchen Sink Stamp's Playful Ovals set over the cardstock with Versamark ink. I embossed them with Clear embossing powder for a tone-on-tone effect. I stamped some of the small arrows that come in the same set around and inside the ovals with Brilliant Blue ink.

That's where I got stuck. I had made this awesome background that I just couldn't bear to cover up. I wracked my brain a little to see what I could come up with because I certainly didn't want to leave it that way. I suppose I could have but I wanted to push myself a bit more.

I stamped the same oval on a piece of Whisper White cardstock with a combination of Versmark ink and Brilliant Blue ink. Okay.....I know that sounds confusing, so let me explain. I wanted to have an embossed image, but I don't have the Brilliant Blue ink in Craft ink form. I knew that if I stamped it on the cardstock with a dye-based ink (the Classic Pad) nothing would have stuck to it. So.....I stamped my image first onto a Versamark pad and THEN onto the Brilliant Blue ink pad. This gave me the stickiness of the Versmark pad and the color of the Brilliant Blue pad, but it didn't ruin my pad. I sprinkled the image with Iridescent Ice embossing powder and heated it. This gave it the look of embossing with the sparkle of glitter that I love so much.

Dscn8385_2 I used my oval cutter to trim an oval out of the center and then trimmed around the image with my scalloped edge scissors. I matted it on a piece of Tempting Turquoise cardstock, which I also trimmed with my scalloped edged scissors. I tied a couple pieces of black gingham ribbon around the sides and finished them off with double knots. This got mounted on top of a strip of Whisper White cardstock that I trimmed with scalloped edge scissors and also sponged with Brilliant Blue ink.

I stamped the word, "smile," (from the Never a Loss 4 words set) across the Whisper White cardstock with Brilliant Blue ink.

Ta-da!

Now that I've done this background on a card, I think it would look awesome on a whole piece of 12 x 12 cardstock, as background paper for a scrapbook page.

Make sure to check in tomorrow.....I baked yummy muffins today and I'll have a new Bake it, Make it & Take it post
