I'll be completely honest with you and tell you that I had ulterior motives for these cupcake toppers. I WAS HUNGRY FOR CUPCAKES! *wink*
I have a soft spot for sweets and especially for cake. Yellow cake, to be exact. Doesn't matter the type of frosting. Yellow cake is like a neutral color of clothing. It goes with anything and I made sure that one of these went right into my belly with a glass of skim milk (which I think cancels out the calories in the cupcake - hey, it works for me).
Why buy cheap looking cupcake toppers at a party store when you can get creative, save money and make your own with your paper crafting supplies! If you're like me, you probably have a boat load of stamps so you can most likely make a cupcake topper for any occasion.
There's quite a few of us taking part in the Festive Frame blog hop and I wanted to do something different AND yummy so cupcake toppers were a perfect fit. Plus, I found these gorgeous shiny red cupcake liners at the discount store the other day so it was meant to be! (BEHIND THE SCENES: Can you believe that my 9 year old daughter wanted to keep the cupcake liner off her cupcake? I told her it would get moldy and she assured me that she could lick all the cupcake "residue" from the liner. I told her she could have a clean liner, as I had more, but she was quite insistent. I wonder how long it will be till it starts growing things on it....maybe I can throw it away before she wakes up and notices it's gone.)
I stamped one of the greetings from the Festive Frame set onto white cardstock with black in and then stamped one of the little decorative swirl images (there's two in the set) underneath the greeting with red ink. I used a gold paint marker to paint an edge around the white cardstock and then mounted it on top of All Spruced Up cardstock. I then mounted this on top of Rocket Red cardstock with pop-dots. Both of the cardstock have a beautiful texture to them. The All Spruced Up has a linen texture and the Rocket Red has a lined texture.
I taped a green toothpick to the back of each topper and then stuck them in the cupcakes. It's as easy as that! They make a great addition to a plate of holiday cupcakes and I didn't even have to leave the house. AND I got a cupcake to enjoy after I was done! Your kids can even help you make a bunch for the holidays, school parties, birthday parties, etc. You can match your cupcake toppers to the invitations, party decorations AND the thank you cards!
